About the Designer

Furuya Kōrin (1875–1910) was a Japanese artist and designer active in Kyoto during the Meiji period. A student of Kamisaka Sekka, he was heavily influenced by the Rinpa school of painting and adopted the name Kōrin in homage to Ogata Kōrin (1658–1716), referring to himself as "Kōrin of the modern age."

His 1904 publication Shima-Shima (meaning "Stripes") is a two-volume collection of color woodblock textile motifs, created for the Kyoto kimono trade. The albums gathered classical and modern stripe and plaid combinations as working references for Nishijin weavers and kimono designers. Published by Unsōdō, the series represents the most functional end of Kōrin's pattern-book practice—a working catalogue of textile motifs elevated to the level of decorative art. The original volumes are now held in museum collections including the Rijksmuseum.
