About the History
This dual-sided hat features two works from the Artworks by African Artists series, compiled by the Harmon Foundation between 1947 and 1967. The Harmon Foundation was a nonprofit organization active from 1922 to 1967 that fostered awareness of African and African-American art, collecting thousands of artworks and photographs before donating its entire collection to the National Archives when it closed.
The Harmon Foundation played a leading role in promoting contemporary African art in the United States, organizing exhibitions and publishing Africa's Contemporary Art and Artists in 1966—the first comprehensive survey of modern art from sub-Saharan Africa.
About This Hat
This reversible bucket hat features Igbo and His People on one side and Latanga with His Guard on the other—both created by unknown African artists circa 1947–1967. The works depict figures within their communities and attendants, rendered in a style characteristic of mid-20th-century African modernism.
