This pillow features Cotton Tree Flowers, a vividly colored drawing made in Calcutta around 1800–1805 by an unknown Indian artist . The work belonged to Edward Smith Stanley, 13th Earl of Derby (1772–1851), and was part of his collection of horticultural books, prints, and drawings kept at Knowsley Hall in Merseyside .

The painting depicts the Bombax ceiba, known in India as the Seemal tree, which blooms with bright orange flowers from February to April. When its fruits split open, silky fronds of cotton waft down to the ground—a common sight in the northern Indian countryside . The English inscription on the lower left records the plant's Linnaean name (Monadelphia Polyandra Bombax ceiba) and its Indian common name, Seemul . The drawing belongs to the Company School tradition, in which Indian artists created botanical works for East India Company officials and British collectors .

Printed on soft, durable cotton, this pillow brings a piece of early 19th-century Indian botanical artistry to your space.
