About the Artist

John Henry Dearle (1859–1932) began at Morris & Co. as a shop assistant at nineteen, trained by William Morris himself, and rose to become the firm's chief designer and Art Director. His work was long attributed to Morris, but today he is recognized as a designer of singular vision whose patterns shaped the Arts and Crafts movement.

About This Set

This napkin set features Dearle's Compton design, created in 1896 for Compton Hall. Long mistaken for Morris's final work, it is now confirmed as Dearle's own—a masterwork requiring 28 colors and two sets of woodblocks to print. Large-scale tulips and poppies flow through rich foliage, bringing nature's abundance to your table.
