About the Artist

Jacoba van Heemskerck van Beest (1876–1923) was a Dutch painter, printmaker, and stained glass designer, and one of the most original voices of early Dutch modernism . Born in The Hague to a family of artists, she studied at the Royal Academy of Art and later worked in Paris under Eugène Carrière . Her work moved through Cubism and into abstraction, influenced by her contact with Piet Mondrian and Jan Toorop in the artists' colony of Domburg .

In 1912, reading Kandinsky's Concerning the Spiritual in Art marked a turning point. She joined the Berlin-based expressionist movement Der Sturm, led by Herwarth Walden, who became her lifelong champion and dealer . From 1915 onward, her works—often titled Bild, Komposition, or Zeichnung followed by a number—were rooted in landscape but pushed toward pure abstraction .
