About This Print
This painting is of Ira Aldridge (1807–1867), the first African American actor to gain European fame. Despite facing racist reviews in London, he toured British provinces for 25 years, excelling in both Shakespearean and comedic roles. Branding himself "The African Tragedian" and claiming royal African descent, he made Othello his signature role, also performing Shylock, Macbeth, and Richard III in whiteface. His career peaked with tours across Russia, France, and Poland in the 1850s–60s, and he was planning a U.S. return at his death.
