About The History
This mug features vintage sheet music from Christmas Melodies, published by the News Chronicle in London, 1935. The design brings together the carol's twelve gifts—from a partridge in a pear tree to twelve drummers drumming—in a nostalgic, musical arrangement.
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" first appeared in print in 1780 as a chant or poem, likely rooted in a memory game played at Twelfth Night celebrations. The familiar melody we know today was composed in the early twentieth century by Frederic Austin. The Christmas Melodies songbook collected carols, songs, and piano music for the holiday season, with a foreword by Malcolm Sargent, one of Britain's most celebrated conductors of the era.
