About the Artist

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter and art theorist, widely credited as a pioneer of abstract art. In 1912, he argued that painting could be as abstract as music—freeing color and line from simply describing objects. His "improvisations" were meant to be spontaneous and unconscious expressions. Of Improvisation No. 30 (Cannons), he wrote: the cannons may reflect the year's war talk, but the real meaning is what you feel when you look at it.
