Eduardo Zamacois y Zabala (1841–1871) was a Spanish painter celebrated for his genre scenes and historical subjects. Described by José Martí as "a painter-philosopher," he was known for work that was "solid, drawing of steel, color of fire"—and for "ideas eternalized."
About This Print
This print featuresPlatonic Love, painted in 1870. Some see a meditation on platonic love—the yearning for something beautiful and unattainable. Others read it as a subtle mockery of idolization, a playful critique of putting art and beauty on a pedestal. The ambiguity is the point. Admiration and ridicule can look exactly the same.
