About the Artist
Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) was a pioneering German artist who embodied the spirit of the European avant-garde. Born in Hanover, he worked across Dada, Constructivism, and Surrealism, and invented his own form of art called "Merz"—a term derived from a fragment of the word "Commerz" (commerce) that appeared in one of his collages. Merz was his answer to the chaos of postwar Germany: art made from discarded tickets, newspaper fragments, and found objects, transformed into compositions of unexpected harmony.
About This Print
This print features Ohne Titel, a collage created around 1931. The work dates from a period when Schwitters was synthesizing the many avant-garde ideas of the day into something distinctly his own—playful yet controlled, radical yet refined.
