About the History
Igbo and His People is part of the Artworks by African Artists series, compiled by the Harmon Foundation between 1947 and 1967. The Harmon Foundation was a nonprofit organization active from 1922 to 1967 that fostered awareness of African and African-American art, collecting thousands of artworks and photographs before donating its entire collection to the National Archives when it closed.
The Harmon Foundation played a leading role in promoting contemporary African art in the United States, organizing exhibitions and publishing Africa's Contemporary Art and Artists in 1966—the first comprehensive survey of modern art from sub-Saharan Africa.
