About the Carol
"The Twelve Days of Christmas" first appeared in print in 1780 as a chant or poem, likely rooted in a memory game played at Twelfth Night celebrations . The familiar melody we know today was composed in the early twentieth century by Frederic Austin . The carol's twelve gifts—partridges, turtle doves, French hens, and all—have been interpreted as symbols of faith for centuries, though the popular "secret catechism" theory is a more recent invention .
The Christmas Melodies songbook, published by the News Chronicle in 1935, collected carols, songs, and piano music for the holiday season . Its foreword was written by Malcolm Sargent, one of Britain's most celebrated conductors of the era
