About the Artist
Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889) was one of the most original and irreverent artists of late Edo and early Meiji Japan. Trained in the traditional Kanō school, he broke free from its strict conventions to develop a style defined by humor, satire, and wild imagination. He was known for his comic animal paintings, caricatures of society, and his legendary appetite for sake—often painting under the name "Kyōsai," meaning "crazy studio." His work remains celebrated for its energy, wit, and keen observation of the natural world.
About This Pillow
This pillow features Cat Catching a Frog, a painting created around 1887. The work captures a mischievous feline mid-pounce, rendered with Kyōsai's signature blend of precise draftsmanship and playful spirit. It's a charming piece of Meiji-era art, bringing a touch of whimsy to your space.
