About the Artist

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875) was a French sculptor and painter, celebrated as one of the most important artists of the Second Empire. Known primarily for his sculpture—including The Dance for the Paris Opera—Carpeaux brought a remarkable sense of movement and emotion to everything he created. His paintings, though less numerous than his sculptures, reveal the same sensitivity to the human form.
