About the Artist

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864–1901) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator, and one of the most celebrated chroniclers of Parisian nightlife in the late 19th century. A fixture of Montmartre's cabarets and dance halls, he captured the energy of the era with a distinctive style defined by bold linework, flat color, and unflinching observation.

About This Print

This print features Four Dancers, a lithograph printed in three colors on machine wove paper in 1895. Four dancers line the stage in a synchronized high-kick routine (rond de jambe), their dynamic black stockings, white petticoats, and plumed hats creating a flurry of motion. Jane Avril stands out on the left, stepping forward with a particularly expressive and distinctive kick that captures the energy and spirit of the performance.
