About the History
This vibrant Calcutta-made drawing of the Seemal tree, once owned by the 13th Earl of Derby, combines Linnaean botanical classification with its local Indian name. It depicts the tree's striking orange blossoms and the cotton-like fronds that scatter when its fruits open, a familiar rural spectacle in northern India. The work belongs to the Company School tradition, in which Indian artists created botanical works for East India Company officials and British collectors.
