About the Artist
Laura Wheeler Waring (1887–1948) was a leading Black female painter of the Harlem Renaissance. She portrayed Black women across all social classes, breaking through class conventions and challenging stereotypes. Though initially skeptical, Harlem Renaissance leader Alain Locke came to praise her modern approach to Black subjects.
