About the Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, and one of the most influential figures in the history of art. Best known for his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Hokusai worked across six decades, reinventing his style countless times. He famously said that all his work before age seventy was not worth counting, and that he hoped to truly understand the form of every living thing by age one hundred.
About This Tote
This tote features The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created around 1831. The image shows a towering wave threatening three boats off the coast of Kanagawa, with Mount Fuji visible in the distance. The wave has become one of the most recognizable images in world art—a masterwork of line, composition, and the tension between nature and humanity.
