About the Artist
F.W. Grafton & Co. was a Manchester-based textile manufacturer established in the mid-19th century, known for producing high-quality, brightly colored furnishing fabrics for the high street. By the 1920s, the firm had become a significant player in British textile design, with works held in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian Design Museum.
The Arts and Crafts movement, which flourished from the 1880s to the 1920s, championed traditional craftsmanship and the beauty of natural forms in an age of increasing industrialization. Grafton’s designs from this period—floral motifs, trellis patterns, and vivid botanical prints—captured that spirit, bringing nature’s vitality into the home through pattern and color.
