About the Designer
Sir Thomas Wardle (1831–1909) was a leading British textile manufacturer and dyer based in Leek, Staffordshire. He took over his father's dyeworks in the early 1870s and became one of the most important figures in late 19th-century textile production. An early member of the Arts and Crafts Movement, Wardle collaborated closely with William Morris—Morris came to Leek in 1873 to study dyes, and Wardle printed many of his designs. His work was sold through Liberty & Co. and other fashionable London stores, and he was knighted in 1897 for his work promoting Indian silk.
About This Bandana
This bandana features Wardle's Indian Poppy design, first printed as velveteen in 1884. The pattern draws on a 17th-century French silk original, with coiling floral forms that reflect Wardle's admiration for historical textiles. Wear it as a neck scarf, hair wrap, or headband.
