About the Artist
Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, and one of the most influential figures in the history of art. Best known for his series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, Hokusai worked across six decades, reinventing his style countless times. He famously said that all his work before age seventy was not worth counting, and that he hoped to truly understand the form of every living thing by age one hundred.
About This Pillow
This dual-sided pillow features two works from Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.
Ejiri in Suruga Province (c. 1830–32) captures a sudden gust of wind on a country road—travelers bent against the blast, papers and hats scattering into the sky, with Mount Fuji impassive in the distance . The scene is celebrated for its almost photographic immediacy, a fleeting moment frozen with precision .
Sekiya Village on the Sumida River (c. 1830–32) shows riders galloping along the riverbank as dawn turns the distant Fuji red. The rhythmic repetition of the horses contrasts with the stillness of the mountain, creating a cinematic sense of motion.
