About the Designer
F.W. Grafton & Co. was a Manchester-based textile manufacturer established in the mid-19th century, known for producing high-quality printed fabrics for the home. The firm was founded by Frederick William Grafton (1816–1890), a British industrialist who established his calico printing business with premises at Broad Oak Works, Accrington, and a showroom in Manchester. By the early 20th century, Grafton & Co. was a significant player in British textile design, with works held in the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian Design Museum.
The firm was known for its range of printed furnishing fabrics, including glazed chintzes, cretonnes, and machine screen and hand block printed linens. Grafton & Co. merged into the Calico Printers' Association in 1899, with Francis Frederick Grafton serving as its first chairman. The company continued producing textiles into the mid-20th century, collaborating with designers like Jacqueline Groag in the 1940s and 1950s.
